Man sentenced to nine years in prison for assault on gay couple

Bayna-Lekheim El-Amin was convicted of assault charges in relation to his assault of Jonathan Snipes and Ethan York-Adams with a wooden chair on May 5, 2015. The incident occurred at Dallas BBQ restaurant in Chelsea, New York. El-Amin was sentenced to nine years in prison on Thursday, September 15 for the offense.

While the media initially portrayed the incident as a hate crime because El-Amin could be heard saying the word “faggot” to the victims. it was later revealed that El-Amin is also gay. Smashing the victims over the head with a wooden chair was retaliation for an earlier altercation initiated by the victims.

According to court documents, the altercation was divided into three parts. First, the force that El-Amin initially employed could be considered self-defense, since Snipes started the altercation. Parts two and three, however, El-Amin continued his assault on Snipes and York-Adams, even as they made their surrender.
