Drunk driving laws in Texas may tighten up

Texas law against DWIs may becoming tougher in the the Texas legislature in 2011. The Austin Police Department Chief has announced that he is in favor of sobriety check points.

Advocates who work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving are also pushing for ignition interlock devices to be installed after a first DWI offense.

Lawmakers in Houston are proposing a Driver Responsibility Program that would make people with  first-time drinking and driving charge to pay a fee of $1,000 a year for three years. Committees are reviewing the proposed programs. In 2009, there were 1,269 deaths in alcohol-related accidents.
