Are the police obligated to tell me why I am being arrested?
When you are under arrest, the police are not required to tell you why they are taking you into custody. While they will generally offer some idea as to why you are being taken in, they do not have to provide you with any information. Within 72 hours of the arrest, you will be brought before a judge who will inform you of the charges against you. It is imperative that you do not go into questioning without your lawyer present, especially if you do not know the reason for your detention. Exercise your right to remain silent.
