Man seeks full compensation after exonerated on assault crime

A man that was wrongfully imprisoned on an aggravated sexual assault charge for 26 years, is now seeking full compensation for the time that he spent in prison.

The 59-year-old man recently filed papers in the Texas Supreme Court that state that the Texas Comptroller failed to give him the correct amount of compensation that is required by state law.

The Tim Cole Act states that exonerees are to be provided with $80,000 for each year that they were incarcerated. The man served 26 years in jail for aggravated sexual assault until 2008 when a DNA test was done that excluded the man as a suspect.

The man’s lawsuit states that the comptroller did not pay him for eight years of his sentence. He is one of 22 people that have been exonerated since 2001 in Dallas County when the DNA testing started.

State officials crackdown on drunk driving during Labor Day holiday

Law enforcement officials throughout the state of Texas are cracking down on drunk driving in a campaign called ‘Drink, Drive, Got to Jail.’

Increased police patrol will begin on August 19 and run through Labor Day, September 5. Officers will be on the streets looking for impaired drivers. Officials have stated that there is a “zero tolerance” policy for drunk driving and if a driver is found impaired they will be going to jail.

In 2010, there were 25,032 alcohol-related crashes in Texas. Police are working to cut this number down drastically. Officials suggest calling a cab, asking a friend for a ride, or making sure that the keys are in the hands of a designated, sober driver.

Law enforcement teams up to change domestic violence policy

South Texas law enforcement agencies are teaming up in order to try and change the policy of domestic violence cases.

It can take almost a year from when police respond to a domestic violence call to when the case makes it to court. During such a long period of time, people move and change their contact information and it becomes really hard to get in touch with the victims.

The police department in Corpus Christi along with the district attorney’s office are hoping that they can change this by having a counselor stay in touch with the victim and help them find the resources that they will need during this difficult time.

Also, a one-hour class on the cycle of abuse has become mandatory if a victim wants to drop the charges. This is done in order for the victim to make sure that they are making the right choice.
