Doctor love affair leads to charges of attempted murder by poison

The trial of 43-year-old breast cancer oncologist Dr. Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, who was charged with aggravated assault for allegedly poisoning her ex-lover and colleague Dr. George Blumenschein, began on September 15, the Associated Press reported.

Ethylene glycol, a common additive ingredient in automotive antifreeze, is readily available at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center laboratories in Houston, where the plaintiff and the defendant worked. Gonzalez-Angulo was accused of adding the poisonous substance to coffee that she gave to Blumenschein after he ended their affair out of loyalty to the long-term girlfriend he lived with.

The defense paints the relationship between the two doctors as consensual and said Blumenschein never even suspected Gonzalez-Angulo of poisoning him until months later when it was suggested by his girlfriend.
