Austin sees rise in domestic violence cases

Austin police have reported a rise in the number of domestic violence cases in the city, especially in homicide cases.

There were 79 homicide cases in Austin since January 2010, a family member, roommate or significant other was a suspect in 23 of the cases. In 2009, there were six homicides that were related to domestic violence.

The state of Texas is also noticing the increase in domestic violence related crimes. In 2010, the Texas Council on Family Violence reported that 142 fatalities were family violence related. This number has increased 28 percent since the year before.

Officials have stated that the increase could be financial pressures on a relationship and law enforcement officials reporting claims more frequently.
